Honey: Mustang Mare

Why is it so hard for her to trust and relax?

"These people keep telling me I can trust them but I can't let my guard down. They seem nice enough, but people eat horses. How do I know that when they run out of food they won't carve me up for dinner? The horses I met before I came here told me horror stories about what people do to horses."

"They treat me very nice here and I feel bad that I can't relax but I want to live." (Something about 3 years. Did anything notable happen three years ago or any reason it might be important to her?)

[The owner explained that Honey had been rescued from the slaughter truck by a previous owner. She foaled three years ago.]

"I'm sorry IÕm so tense. It seems like I'm going to jump out of my skin when they come near and it's even worse when they touch me. I see that they treat their other horse family with kindness but I'm just not sure it's safe to let my guard down. If they can be patient with me I'll try to do some deep breathing and relax when I'm with them. I want to be good and I want to show them how much I appreciate the home and love they've given me."

[A few days later]

Honey how are you today? Why are you afraid of men in hats?

"Feeling much better today except it's too hot. Men wear hats to hide their true nature. They think they're fooling me but they're not. If they are so evil that they need to wear a hat to hide it then I don't want anything to do with them. It was a lot of evil men in hats who rounded me up with my herd and stuck me in a crowded box on wheels. We were all very afraid. I haven't yet met a man wearing a hat that was trustworthy so they set my teeth on edge. I'll try to keep an open mind if you say that some of them are not evil. I don't like it when people make snap judgments about me so I shouldn't do that to them."
