In Memoriam

When a friend visited an Arabian show barn, she came away with lots of questions about some of the horses. I was happy to chat with them to see what they might have to share. It was an interesting conversation.

Princess: Arabian Mare

Ridden in a western saddle with thick pad. Bucks. Why does she buck?

"That saddle is just too long. It sits on my kidneys. I defy you not to buck when someone is slamming your kidneys around. I know they aren't doing it on purpose, but I'm trying every way I can to tell them. They think the thick pad is protecting me but it just isn't the answer. They need to find a saddle that is shorter and doesn't whap me on the kidneys with every bounce. Can they use an English saddle? I like the way they look and I'll bet they would feel a lot better too. That big pad is not really comfortable. It's like carrying around a soggy donut under the saddle. I'd really appreciate it if you could let them know because I want to be good but I just can't stand the pain and discomfort."

[The soggy donut reference puzzled me until I learned that she sweats excessively. Guess that might feel like a soggy donut.]

Sammy: Arab Gelding

Did you come to this life to be a pampered show horse? How can you tolerate being stalled for so many hours every day without going crazy?

"I most definitely chose this life. Can't you see how well suited I am to it? Yes it would be nice to get out more, but I am admired for my fine physique and I don't mind being pampered and kept sequestered so that I don't mar my beautiful coat. Sun bleaching is not a pretty sight on me either. I'm quite content with my life. What is it that bothers you?"

Lilly: 21, Arab Mare

Why is she underweight?

Her metabolism is out of whack. Too many years of garbage in. She needs to detox and have her system supported so that it can use the nutrients coming in. Right now they are passing through hardly utilized. She gets enough food, it just isn't doing her much good.

She stresses too much and would benefit from some relaxation work. Help her to be comfortable in her skin. She is insecure. She feels vulnerable because she sees herself as frail. In the wild she would be dinner, shunned from the herd. Part of her is cognizant of this. She is by nature a worrier. She needs to come to a place of peace where she can set aside her worries and just enjoy the grass and the sunshine and the company of friends, 2 and 4 legged. She feels old. She needs to reconnect with her well being, become centered and get back her zest for life. She does not like her ears touched or pressure on her poll. It causes her stress. She has been handled roughly in the past and has a long memory. When she sees other horses getting ridden but not her, she feels inferior and wonders what is wrong with her. She needs to understand that her health is first priority then the rest will fall into place. They are doing her a kindness not riding right now, it is not a punishment or statement about her worth.
